Abstract:
High school students must be adequately prepared in the Science Process Skills (SPS) owing to the fact that science is more of a process than product. The product refers to the huge body of knowledge in science and the process refers to the processes of doing science, both of which are deeply intertwined.SPS are fundamental in instilling the spirit of scientific inquiry by training students in basic processes to lead the inquiry. However, it is found that in traditional science classroom theory remains divorced from practice and the effective integration of SPS into classroom instruction remains a significant challenge. The present study tried to construct a tool that could measure high school students’ understanding of Basic Science Process Skills. The tool was validated using inter rater reliability by 7 experts of higher education from the field of science. The Fleiss’ Kappa inter rater reliability was found to be showing moderate agreement among the raters. The first trial on a sample of 372 students from class 9 was conducted and item analysis was performed showing all items to be of effective difficulty and discriminatory indices. The reliability was calculated on a sample of 200 students. The split halfreliability with Spearman Brown Prophecy correction and was found to be 0.81 which is a highly reliable index. The KR-20 and Cronbach alpha coefficient were also found to be highly reliable which were found as 0.82 and 0.75 respectively. Finally, the norms of the constructed tool were established.
