Abstract:
Disaster management has become a vital ability for educators, particularly in the current global context of increasing natural and man-made disasters. Teachers play a pivotal role in preparing and leading communities through crisis situations, requiring comprehensive training in disaster management. However, the absence of a reliable and valid instrument to assess disaster management skills poses a challenge for teacher education programs. Hence, this study focuses on the development of a standardized tool to measure the disaster management skills of B.Ed., trainees. A 5-point Likert scale was constructed, comprising 50 statements, with 39 positive and 11 negative items to ensure a balanced assessment of skills. The tool was tested on 100 B.Ed. trainees and showed good consistency and accuracy. Using detailed statistical analysis, including t-test for item discrimination, Cronbach’s alpha for reliability, and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for normality, the tool was refined to include 38 selected statements. These statements demonstrated high internal consistency and strong discriminatory power, ensuring the tool’s accuracy in assessing disaster management skills. The study highlights the importance of equipping teachers with disaster preparedness skills, given their critical role during emergencies.
